Adelphi University Offers a Unique Cross-Genre M.F.A. in Creative Writing

Adelphi University's Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing is a unique cross-genre program that allows students to specialize in fiction, poetry, or playwriting.

One of Adelphi's newest graduate degrees in the College of Arts and Sciences, the M.F.A. program in Creative Writing quickly garnered praise and support from such writers as the celebrated novelist and poet Alice Hoffman. An Adelphi alum and prolific writer of more than 18 novels and two books of poems, Ms. Hoffman has personally funded two generous Alice Hoffman Fellowships for the M.F.A. program.

The Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing

The 37-credit M.F.A. program is taught by distinguished faculty members who have published extensively. The multifaceted program includes literature courses and extensive writing workshops and prepares students for careers in writing, teaching, and/or more advanced graduate studies through training in creative writing, language and literary studies, research, and teaching.

The creative writing experience is enhanced by Adelphi's weekly Professional Development Practicum. A unique feature of the graduate program, the practicum introduces students to professional writers across many disciplines and gives them realistic awareness of what a life in letters entails.

Graduate studies include a combination of writing workshops, literature classes, thesis colloquium, and thesis independent study. The thesis must display a mastery of writing skills and be a manuscript of near-published or performable quality.

All graduate students become members of the Association of Writers and Writing Programs. The professional association of writers provides members with professional and artistic support and invaluable assistance in finding positions of employment.

Internship Opportunities Within the Creative Writing Program

The faculty and staff of the M.F.A. in Creative Writing program have developed relationships with dozens of leading organizations in the creative and performing arts field in the New York metropolitan area. Graduate students are encouraged to apply for internships at diverse organizations, such as the Academy of American Poets and the National Book Foundation.

M.F.A. Degree in Creative Writing, Fiction Concentration

The fiction program views fiction in two ways-with a regard for tradition and with a capacity for experimentation. Workshops and classes focus on the elements of craft, varied narrative philosophies, and the infinite resourcefulness of the creative imagination. The program fosters the work-ethic philosophy that writers must collaborate and share, write and rewrite, read and re-read.

M.F.A. Degree in Creative Writing, Poetry Concentration

Poetry classes and workshops are craft-based and dedicated to the writing and rewriting of poems of all kinds. Published and unpublished texts are used to develop reading and editing skills. The program considers and develops thoughtful and practical approaches to the life of the poet and the creative process as it is viewed through the eyes of those who are interested in teaching and creating. Students help one another set artistic and professional goals.

M.F.A. Degree in Creative Writing, Dramatic Writing Concentration

The dramatic writing program emphasizes the study of the structure of plays to teach students the craftsmanship of the art of storytelling and prepare them for life in dramatic writing. Students study the evolution of dramatic storytelling throughout history and how theater has always reacted, reflected, and reinterpreted the present moment of living. From this foundation, students focus on the genres of playwriting, screenwriting, and/or scriptwriting for television. Writing workshops are based on the development process, focusing on how a writer creates a personal methodology for his or her craft.
