A Flexible Academic Environment

The Henry M. Goldman School of Dental Medicine at Boston University (BUSDM) is dedicated to developing each student's individual academic capabilities. A variety of degree and certificate programs permit students to pursue active areas of research best suited to their interests in collaboration with an experienced faculty. Located on the Boston University Medical Center campus, research programs can be collaborative with additional resources and faculty expertise available at Boston University School of Medicine, Boston University School of Public Health, and at other academic institutions in Boston.

Advanced Research in Oral Biology

Boston University is renowned for its research programs. BUSDM was recently ranked fifth in the country in oral and dental research funding from the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research (NIH/NIDCR). The Department of Periodontology and Oral Biology, Division of Oral Biology at Boston University offers a Ph.D. in Oral Biology, in addition to other research degrees including Masters and Doctor of Science degrees.

Research studies include subjects as diverse as oral host defense systems including both acquired and innate immunity, and the role of cytokines in periodontal diseases and wound healing. Additional active research in oral biology include determining the structure and functions of salivary proteins, extracellular matrix biosynthesis structure and function, and molecular and cellular interactions that occur in systemic and oral diseases, gingival overgrowth research, cancer research, and molecular and cellular control of tooth development and formation, and translational research topics.

Progressive Laboratory Research Facilities at BUSDM

BUSDM is noted for its excellent research faculty, facilities and equipment located on the Boston University Medical Center in Boston. . Basic research and clinical research facilities are state of the art, and are located principally at the Center for Advanced Biomedical Research, the Evans Biomedical Research Center, the Evans Building, and the Goldman School of Dental Medicine building itself, all within a two block area that includes Boston University School of Medicine research facilities. Extensive core research facilities available to all Boston University Medical center research laboratories and opportunities for multidisciplinary collaborations are readily available.

Mentorships under Prominent Faculty

Boston University's faculty members regularly receive accolades and recognition from both the private and public sectors for innovative internationally recognized published contributions to dental and biomedical research. The Ph.D. in Oral Biology is a research degree program that trains individuals with a strong scientific background and who have an interest in pursuing a research as a major part of their future careers.

During their course of study, students work closely with experienced faculty members on cutting edge research projects relevant to oral biology and oral diseases.

Benefit from Practical Training

While the School of Dental Medicine has a strong focus on research, post-graduate clinical training is a major strength of the school and includes advanced training in operative dentistry, orthodontics, periodontology, prosthodontics, endodontics, pediatric dentistry, or oral and maxillofacial surgery leading to the award of clinical certificates (CAGS), often combined with Masters or D.Sc. research training. Students enrolled in the Ph.D. Program in Oral Biology may also participate in aspects of clinically related research during the typical five year program.

Valuable Experience While Contributing to Community Service Projects

The Patient Care Center at Boston University provides affordable dental health care to the surrounding community, benefiting dental students with practical experience and training. Graduate students in clinical programs perform the more advanced treatment procedures under the watchful eye of qualified dentists and faculty members. This provides clinical dental students with valuable practical application of clinical dental procedures.

In addition students can use the experience to learn how to develop good patient relationships through effective communication. Ensuring that patients are relaxed during treatment procedures is an important aspect of working in the dental profession.
