Fordham University's M.S. in Computer and Information Science Prepares Graduates for Career Advancement

Fordham University's Graduate School of Arts and Sciences at Lincoln Center Campus in Manhattan, New York, offers a multi-faceted M.S. in Computer and Information Science (M.S.C.I.S.) degree program and Advanced Certificates in Financial Econometrics and Data Analysis and also Biomedical Informatics that blend analytical, practical, and theoretical thinking and prepare students with the advanced and comprehensive skills they'll need to become leaders in a computer-driven global society.

Historic Fordham University is an independent university in the Jesuit tradition with campuses in the Bronx, Manhattan's Lincoln Center, Westchester County, and Louis Calder Center Biological Field Station in Armonk, NY. Most of the CIS graduate courses take place at Fordham's main Rose Hill campus in the Bronx.

Computer Scientists and Database Administrators in Great Demand

Computer science and database administration will be 2 of the fastest growing occupations over the next decade, according to the Department of Labor's 2009 "Occupational Outlook Handbook," which measures employment trends over 10-year periods. Between 2006 and 2016, job opportunities will grow by 37%, driven by rapid growth in computer systems design and related services.

Statistics reflect that more sophisticated, complex technology is being implemented across all organizations, fueling demand for computer scientists and database administrators. "There is growing demand for network systems and data communication analysts to help firms maximize their efficiency with available technology," the handbook states.

Job statistics reveal that advanced degrees such as Fordham's Master in Computer and Information Science degree will give job seekers the competitive edge for career advancement and success.

Computer Science and Information Science Curriculum

The M.S. in Computer and Information Science degree program requires 30 course work credits of which 6 credits may optionally be thesis work. All students begin with a core of 4 courses: "Foundations of Computer Science," "Computer Language Theory," "Computer Elements and Architecture," and "Database Systems."

Beyond the core, students choose courses from 2 of 3 concentration areas: database systems and software, data communications and networks, and computation and algorithms. The master's curriculum is rounded out with elective courses such as "Bioinformatics," "Computer Security and Ethics," "Projects and Internships," "Special Topics in Computer Science," "Computer Science Thesis," and "Internet and Web Programming."

Specific examples of courses include: "Object Oriented Software Design," an advanced course in software engineering that uses examples of OO technology in the development of information systems and real-time systems; and "Internet and Java Programming," which covers computing on the Internet and java programming with various applications such as HTML and Web authoring, multimedia and large web programming and website development, networking files and streams and server communications.

From the study of robotics and man-machine interactions to the prolific business applications of web programming and website development, M.S.C.I.S. graduates have the well-rounded advanced skills for leadership positions in the computer-centric world of the 21st century.

Graduate students enrolled in the Advanced Certificate in Financial Econometrics and Data Analysis program will take courses such as "Algorithms and Data Analysis," "Applied Econometrics," and "Financial Econometrics."

Graduate students enrolled in the Advanced Certificate in Biomedical Informatics program will take courses such as "Biostatistics," "Molecular Biology," "Bioinformatics," and "Medical Informatics."

CIS Faculty of Exceptional Scholars and Innovative Researchers

The Computer and Information Science department boasts a faculty of well respected and productive scholars/educators who are equally committed to both teaching and cutting-edge research. Each faculty member brings a wealth of experience at the leading edges of computer and information science.

The CIS faculty is international and pursues research interests in a myriad of areas such as object oriented design, text data mining, java programming and other computer languages, computer algorithms, AI, bioinformatics computing, mobile computing, networking, accelerator-based mass spectrometry of radioisotopes, Internet technologies, and risk computing.

State-of-the-Art Computer Laboratories

Graduate students join CIS faculty members in robust research projects at the school's 2 computer laboratories. The facilities feature a Beowulf cluster used for technical applications such as simulations, biotechnology, data mining, and stream processing. The Computer Vision & Robotics Lab is equipped with multiple PCs and SGIs, static and moving cameras, and several robot platforms.

Research projects focus on 3 main areas: 1) "Automatic Surveillance" - the research team studies the automated management of multiple camera sources and sensory fusion for multiple target tracking in crowded settings; 2) "Augmented Reality" - concerns hands-free user interaction based on information derived from one or more cameras; and 3) "Robotics" - addresses performance guarantees for mobile robot activity.

The Laboratory of Data Mining Research conducts research in data mining and machine learning. Research equipment includes an SAS Enterprise Miner and C5.0. Data mining focuses on issues arising from the analysis of very large data sets. Interdisciplinary in nature, data mining borrows heavily from various disciplines including machine learning, AI, statistics, information systems, and databases.

Graduate course work is further enhanced by CIS Research Talks, a provocative series of research presentations given by outside speakers from top universities and industrial laboratories.
