Graduate Studies at Indiana State University

Indiana State University (ISU) offers more than 90 graduate programs through 5 academic colleges and ISU's distance learning program, including professional development and continuing education courses. Graduate programs provide leadership, education, and professional preparation to students throughout Indiana and the United States. Courses use student and faculty member teaching, scholarship, research, community engagement, and creative outlets.

10 Doctoral Programs

Indiana State University offers a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in 6 fields: biology (with specializations in ecology, microbiology, and physiology), curriculum and instruction, educational administration, school psychology, spatial and earth sciences, and technological management. A Doctor of Psychology (PsyD) is available in clinical psychology. Students may also pursue the Doctor of Health Sciences (DHSc), Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP), and Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT).

Over 40 Master's Programs

ISU offers over 40 master's programs. The Master of Arts (MA) is available in 5 areas: studio art, communication, English, geography, and linguistics/TESL/cross-linguistics. The Master of Science (MS) is available in 19 areas: athletic training, biology, career and technical education for teacher licensure, clinical mental health counseling, computer science, earth and quaternary sciences, educational technology, electronics and computer technology, family and consumer sciences, health sciences, human resource development for higher education and industry, nursing, occupational therapy, physician assistant studies, recreation and sport management, special education, student affairs and higher education, technology education, and technology management.

Dual MA/MS degrees are offered in 7 fields: communication disorders, criminology and criminal justice, history, mathematics, occupational safety management, physical education, and psychology.

ISU offers 4 Master of Education (MEd) programs in curriculum and instruction, elementary education, school administration and supervision, and school counseling. In addition, ISU offers the Master of Business Administration (MBA), Master of Fine Arts (MFA), Master of Music (MM), Master of Public Administration (MPA), and Master of Social Work (MSW).

2 Educational Specialist Degrees

ISU offers 2 educational specialist (EdS) degree programs. The EdS in School Administration is an intermediate program for students eventually seeking a master's degree. The program is designed to develop students' core skills and competencies above the license level. The EdS in School Psychology is a research-based and theory-driven program designed to prepare school psychologists with a broad education in cognitive and behavioral sciences.

10 Certificate Programs

ISU offers graduate certificates designed to provide higher-level skills and education in 10 distinct areas. Certificates are available in public administration, public personnel administration, human resource development, family nursing , instructional design, mental health counseling, nursing education', piano pedagogy, teaching English as a second language, and curriculum, instruction, and media technology for higher education and industry.

15 Licensure and Endorsement Programs

ISU offers 14 graduate-level licensure programs: "Computer Education License and Educational Technology Facilitation," "Director of Career and Technical Education," "Director of Curriculum and Instruction," "Director of Exceptional Needs," "Driver Education," "Gifted and Talented Endorsement," "Health and Safety," "Reading Teacher Licensure," "School Administration and Supervision," "School Counselor Post-Master's Non-Degree License," "School Counselor -- Professional License," "School Counselor -- Standard License," "Secondary Teacher -- Post-Baccalaureate Non-Degree Licensure," and "Visual Impairment Non-Degree License Program for Exceptional Needs."

A non-degree graduate endorsement program is also available in "Learning Disabilities," "Emotionally Handicapped," "Mental Retardation," or "Gifted and Talented Education."

Distance Learning Programs from ISU

Many graduate degrees, courses, and professional development programs may be completed mostly or entirely through ISU's distance learning program. Twelve master's programs are available, including criminology and criminal justice, electronics and computer technology, elementary education, health sciences, human resource development, nursing, occupational safety management, public administration, school administration and supervision, sport management, student affairs and higher education, and technology management.

Online certificates and licensures are available in 11 areas: career and technical education, driver education, family nurse practitioner, gifted and talented education, human resource development, middle/secondary teaching, nursing education, public administration, school administration, teaching English as a second language (ESL), and visual impairment.

An additional 5 doctoral and educational specialist programs are also available online: educational administration (higher education leadership), educational administration (school administration), nursing practice, school administration, and technology management.

Applied Research Opportunities at ISU

Faculty members and students of ISU are actively engaged in a wide variety of applied research projects that impact the college community, the state, and the world. Initiatives that result from ISU research are developed to create new jobs, stimulate business start-ups, and foster economic growth. Among the many research centers affiliated with ISU are the Indiana University School of Medicine at Terre Haute (IUSMTH) and the Center for Instruction, Research, and Technology (CIRT).

ISU's Committed Faculty

Faculty members at Indiana State University work alongside students in research, advise student organizations, and are visible campus partners. For instance, Associate Professor Robyn Lugar in the social work program has established a collaborative and cooperative learning environment between students and faculty members. Dr. Michael Hayden maintains active research interests in quality systems, workplace law, and technological efficacy in applied engineering and technology management. Dr. Thomas Sawyer in sports medicine has over 40 years of experience in higher education and continues his active community service in addition to his academic and professional responsibilities.

Financial Aid Opportunities for Graduate Students at ISU

The financial aid office at Indiana State University awards more than $8.5 million in scholarships and aid annually to 74 percent of all students. Graduate students may receive assistance in a variety of ways, including federal work study, graduate assistantships and fellowships, scholarships, student employment, and payment plans. Scholarships offered through the College of Graduate and Professional Studies include the Arab Student Aid International Scholarship, Lois Burdick Scholarship, and Paul Witty Scholarship.
