Overview

Global thinkers, engaged leaders

The MA in Integrated Global Communication at Kennesaw State University (KSU) is an innovative, contemporary program designed to prepare a new generation of leaders in globally-integrated organizations. KSU is located in metro-Atlanta, one of the most vibrant business and media centers in the US, and home to CNN, Coca-Cola, Delta, UPS, Home Depot, Georgia Pacific, and many other organizations with global reach.

Thinking, assessing, analyzing and creating from a global perspective

Market share, mind share, and competitive positioning are vital ingredients for organizational success. Achieving these goals on a global scale presents special challenges for professional communicators charged with building and maintaining cooperation, collaboration, and coordination. Communicating shared meanings across countries and regions with diverse cultural, political, and economic characteristics requires knowledge and skills previous generations of professional communicators never imagined. Global communication refers to the information flow that transcends national boundaries; that is mindful of organizational goals and objectives while being sensitive to peoples of different cultures and races; and that recognizes political and economic differences among global organizational stakeholders.

About the program

The MAIGC is a professional-oriented graduate program that is unique to Georgia and the Southeast, and one of only a handful of graduate programs in the US that focus exclusively on global communication. The MAIGC features an innovative 33-hour curriculum that offers a balance of theory and skills important for a professional master's program. Students are admitted each fall and progress through the four-semester program together.

Innovative curriculum

The first fall and spring semesters are spent in the classroom at Kennesaw State University, and all classes are scheduled during weeknights 6:30 - 9:15 p.m. The curriculum follows a lock-step model in which all students take all courses together, except for the summer international experience. Students take "Survey of Global Communication," "Communication Theory," and "International Public Relations" in the first fall, and "Communication Research Methods," "Communication for Multinational Corporations," and "Communication and Media Technology Seminar" in the spring.

The centerpiece of the curriculum is the summer international experience (SIE) where students choose among four options for immersion into a foreign culture: a directed study where students complete independent research projects or attend courses at foreign institutions; a practicum where students work abroad for nonprofit, for-profit, or government entities with global reach; a study tour that features tours, presentations, and interviews with communication professionals in foreign cities that are global commercial/media centers; or a study abroad course taught by a KSU faculty member.

The final fall features a student-designed colloquium series and a capstone experience that features a team-oriented professional project for a global client. The student-designed colloquium features speakers selected by the cohort presenting topics chosen by the cohort. The capstone course features a project in which students propose research-based strategies and tactics for a client who presents a global communication problem or opportunity to student teams.

Admissions criteria

Admission to the program requires an earned BA or BS degree in communication or a related field from an accredited college or university, along with a GRE score, official transcripts, evidence of English language proficiency (for international students), and a two-page curriculum vitae. A minimum undergraduate GPA of 2.75 is required. Also required is a letter of application which should explain the applicant's views about how the MAIGC fits with his or her career goals, and a 500-word essay that should address the importance of global communication in today's global marketplace. Three letters of recommendation, at least one from an academic source, are also required for consideration. Prior experience in communication practices is preferred, but excellent applicants without communication-related experience will be considered. Students from a variety of academic disciplines have succeeded in the MAIGC. An admissions committee begins reviewing applications in March. The final deadline for submitting all required admission materials is June 1.

All-inclusive tuition

An all-inclusive tuition covers all costs associated with enrolling and taking classes in the MAIGC, including international travel. The premium tuition covers all textbooks and learning materials students will need in all MAIGC courses over all four MAIGC semesters. Each student will receive an iPad for use in class and to use during the SIE to post blogs, photos, etc. Tuition also covers the travel costs associated with the SIE. Travel costs include round trip airline tickets and some lodging. In-state tuition rate is charged for all students regardless of residency, and this is covered by the premium tuition. Graduate assistantships, which cover some of the cost of in-state tuition and fees, are awarded on a competitive basis. The number of graduate assistantships available for any cohort varies due to funding.
