Overview

A Firm Commitment to Excellence in Education

Loyola University Maryland's newly launched School of Education is grounded in Jesuit educational philosophy, which emphasizes academic excellence, reflective practice, and social justice in education.

With a curriculum centered on urban education, the school offers a wide array of master's and post-master's programs.

At the helm is the School's founding dean, Peter C. Murrell, Jr., Ph.D., a nationally known author and expert in urban education.

Classes for the School of Education are offered in three locations: in Timonium, located in the northern Baltimore suburbs; in Columbia, 20 minutes from the D.C. suburbs; and on Loyola's main campus, Evergreen, in Baltimore.

Curriculum and Instruction

With a focus on equity, social justice, and reform in the K-12 classroom, this interdisciplinary curriculum includes courses about educational theory, history, and philosophy, as well as classes focusing on race, class, and gender. Through research, discussion, and seminars, the program delves into the most pressing issues in education today, including achievement gaps, low academic performance, and unsafe schools.

Students can choose from many areas of specialization, such as educational leadership, educational technology, and special education, or they can create their own specialized program.

Kodaly Music Education

The Kodaly Center for Music Education is one of the few places in the world where students can earn a Master of Education degree in Kodaly music education. Named after a Hungarian musician, this is a method based on singing that develops the skills to understand what is heard, then transfer that to reading, writing, improvisation, composition, and musical artistry.

Designed for working music educators, Kodaly music education is a rigorous teacher training program based on cutting edge music research and an individualized approach to teaching.

The program coursework can be completed over the course of four consecutive summers. Rather than a master's thesis, students complete a working portfolio.

Special Education

Loyola's nationally-recognized certification and master's degree programs in special education focus on strategies, legal issues, delivery models, and professional skills needed to provide high-quality services to children and adolescents with special needs.

The program is accessible to both advanced career professionals and people new to the field.

Graduate students can choose from three M.Ed. concentrations: early childhood special education (birth to age 8), elementary and middle school special education (grades 1 through 8), or secondary special education (grades 6 through 12). In addition, Loyola offers a 30-credit post-graduate program that leads to a Certificate of Advanced Study in Education (CASE) for students who have already completed a master's degree in special education.

Montessori Education

The Center for Montessori Education, the oldest accredited Montessori training center in North America, emphasizes the importance of community and cultural context in social learning.

The school's Montessori program is the only institution in the country to offer a combined master's degree program with specialty training in Montessori education.

Graduate students in this nationally-recognized program gain experience in Montessori classrooms, and later get placed as student teachers.

The school offers two degree programs: a Master of Education in Montessori Education and a Certificate for Advanced Study in Education (CASE). Students can choose to concentrate their degree in either primary (ages 3 to 6) or elementary (ages 6 to 12) Montessori education.

Educational Leadership

This program is designed for successful teachers with a desire to become leaders in student achievement and teacher performance. Blending theory and practice, the program offers M.Ed. and M.A. degrees and is centered on the National Standards for Educational Leadership and the Maryland Instructional Leadership Framework.

Loyola also offers two 18-credit post-master's certification programs in either administration and supervision or advanced study in education.

Educational Technology

The school's educational technology graduate program focuses on how to best serve a school system using technology. In addition to exploring practical applications of technology, students also delve into ethical, philosophical, and theoretical perspectives. Topics include planning technology, implementing it into the curriculum, and administering a technology program.

To apply what they've learned, students take part in an internship at a school or school district.

M.A. and M.Ed. programs, both nationally recognized by the International Society for Technology in Education, are offered.

School Counseling

The school counseling program prepares students to design and implement a complete school counseling program for grades pre-K to 12.

Graduates must complete two placements in local schools.

Through this program, students can pursue an M.A., M.Ed., and a Certificate of Advanced Study in Education. After successfully finishing the program, graduates are eligible for state certification.

Literacy Education

Loyola's graduate program in literacy education highlights the cultural and social practices that shape the way children read and write. Based on research, theory, and practice, the comprehensive program prepares educators to teach children to read, write, listen, speak, and view in order to become successful learners.

Students can choose between the M.Ed. with a certification as a reading specialist and the M.Ed. in Literacy Education.

Master of Arts in Teaching

The Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT), offered both on a part- and full-time basis, provides initial teacher certification. This comprehensive program integrates coursework, an internship, and one-on-one attention.

MAT candidates can concentrate in elementary or secondary education.

The program includes two field experiences and a supervised internship in a Baltimore area school. Students who are already teaching in their certification area finish their field experiences and internship in their schools.

The Center for Innovation in Urban Education

The Center for Innovation in Urban Education (CIUE) brings educators, local organizations, and the community together with the hopes of improving the educational experience of urban youth and their families. As a central axis of the School of Education, CIUE supports scholarship, research, and proactive work in the community and around the country.

CIUE consists of five institutes -- Literacy, Language, and Culture; Engaged Educational Leadership; Urban Outreach; International Education; and Black Achievement.
