Overview

The New York Studio School Is Committed to Excellence in Drawing, Painting, and Sculpture

The New York Studio School is a place where drawing, painting, sculpture, and art history are studied in depth. Students have the opportunity to focus and hone their respective areas of interest with few distractions. The Studio School is an organization where leaders in the arts are committed to teaching students how to shape and carve out a practice of research and excellence that will sustain the years beyond their studies. The Studio School's present location first served as Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney's salon and studio, then as the Whitney Museum of American Art, until 1966 when it became the New York Studio School. The painters, sculptors, and art historians who teach at the School reflect upon a variety of diverse attitudes which are held together by the common bonds: of quality, integrity, and intensity of research within the studio practice

The School aims to engage students in an ongoing dialogue with drawing, painting, and sculpture; to encourage hard work and rigorous thinking; to empower students with unique ethical and philosophical frameworks for a lifetime of work. Graduating students leave the School with an understanding of the vocabulary of art and professional practices. Their engaged imaginations are supported by a strict work ethic, the passion of vision, and the ambition to live and sustain oneself as an artist.

M.F.A. Program Offers Concentrations in Painting or Sculpture Merging a Rigorous Studio Practice with Critical Studies

The M.F.A. program offers concentrations in painting and sculpture to graduate students who possess a bachelor's degree or equivalent prior to enrollment. The M.F.A. program requires maintenance of a full-time studio practice, with students concentrating on their work. Students have access to their studios on a full-time basis. While enrolled, students are immersed in New York City's museums, arts organizations, and its culture as a resource for their research.

During the first year of study, students choose a core faculty member with whom they work alongside in an atelier model. Faculty members are present in the classrooms two days each week and students are expected to work on the objectives set by the instructors throughout the week Faculty contact hours are reduced as students develop in their second year. MFA candidates work in semi-private studios towards the completion of their individual thesis projects.

Studio practice is balanced with Critical Studies courses in addition to peer and faculty critiques. Lectures and seminars are held throughout the semester, as well as small group discussions with current and visiting faculty. The Critical Studies courses provide the groundwork for students to compose the statements that support their final thesis project.

Degree candidates will be assessed on a continual basis throughout their time at the School. Courses are graded by faculty in accordance with the School's grading policy. These credits must include all required courses. A residency of at least two academic years is required to complete the degree.
