MS in Information Systems for the Workplace

The Master of Science (MS) in Information Systems (IS) program at Northeastern University is a unique program that combines the academic coursework with the university's top-ranking cooperative education program. The program's faculty members boast both industrial expertise and academic achievement, making Northeastern's program a career-oriented IS program.

Students may opt to complete the program on either a full-time or a part-time basis.

The program has produced a stream of graduates who have been hired by private companies and institutions as enterprise architects, software project managers, business and system analysts, data architects, software application architects, and IT risk/compliance specialist. Over 80 percent of the programs graduate's receive multiple job offers upon graduation.

An Emphasis on Business Skills

The MS in Information Systems (MSIS) program also stands out in its heavy emphasis on building business and management skills. Although the program is not a Master of Business Administration, its emphasis on fostering the development of these soft skills allows Northeastern graduates to take leadership positions in the firms and institutions they join.

Hence, among the 4 basic courses all students must take is the course named Business Analysis and Information Engineering.

Four Areas of Specialty

Graduate students can choose to specialize in one of 4 areas: application engineering, software project management, data management, or compliance and risk management.

Students within the application engineering may take courses to build skills in software development for the Web and the smart phone. Software project management electives include combine business and IT, such as Organizational Change and IT or Business Process Engineering and Management.

The Unique Cooperative Education Program

Northeastern University has consistently ranked as a national leader in cooperative education. The co-op program is a cornerstone of the graduate program in IS. Approximately 50 percent of master's degree students obtain co-op jobs in the greater Boston area after their first semesters of coursework.

A Faculty with Real World Experience

The faculty includes both full-time faculty members from the College of Engineering as well as adjunct faculty members with specialized areas of work experience. Program director, Professor Kal Bugrara, investigates innovative ways to automate medical processes and the clinical trial system.

Deborah Cicerone, by contrast, has over 20 years of IT expertise in the life and health insurance, financial, and gas and oil industries. She brings her experience as an enterprise architect, an application manager, a systems designer, and an application programmer into the classroom.

Tricia McConville's research and experience lies in international business, leadership, and economic development for women. She brings with her experience with micro-lending programs for the economically-disadvantage in the Boston area.

MSIS Admission Requirements

Individuals who would like to be considered for the information systems master's program at Northeastern should submit GRE and TOEFL scores and official transcripts. All applications are submitted online.
