About Penn State World Campus

Penn State World Campus is the online campus of Penn State University. The idea of distance education is not a new concept for Penn State. The University has been offering courses at a distance for more than 100 years. In 1892, Penn State founded one of the nation's first correspondence courses and in 1998, it was one of the first major accredited universities to provide online education. Today, Penn State World Campus offers more than 100 of the most in-demand graduate and undergraduate degree and certificate programs in education, business, engineering, technology, health care, and more.

At Penn State World Campus, the mission is to make sure that students have access to a quality academic experience, even if they have jobs and family obligations to fulfill. If students can't come to one of the brick-and-mortar campuses, Penn State World Campus will bring the campus to them. The online courses offered by World Campus are the same courses that are offered on campus. Therefore, a diploma earned through World Campus will look no different from the one earned by students on a physical campus. It will not differentiate the method of delivery or state that the degree was earned online. The programs offered by World Campus are accredited through the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools, and many of the individual programs have additional accreditations through governing bodies in those particular fields of study.

Degree and Certificate Programs

The Penn State online graduate degree programs enable students to upgrade their knowledge and achieve advanced educational credentials on their own time and from any location. Penn State World Campus delivers more than 30 online master's degrees that provide students with opportunities to learn from world-class Penn State graduate faculty members and study with other career-focused students with diverse backgrounds. Earning a respected and recognized accredited master's degree online from Penn State, a nationally recognized institution, will benefit students' careers and professional advancement.

Penn State's online graduate and postbaccalaureate certificates are discipline-specific, graduate-level programs designed for professionals who are looking to continue their educations at the graduate level with the convenience and flexibility of an online learning delivery format. Online certificate programs offered by Penn State World Campus are designed and taught by Penn State professors who combine their academic expertise with real-world experience. Most of the more than 30 World Campus graduate and postbaccalaureate certificate programs are 12 to 15 credits. Earning a Penn State online graduate certificate provides a respected, stand-alone credential, and a valuable way to further career advancement, increase professional development, or explore a career change.

Student Experience

World Campus students are supported by a team of knowledgeable and compassionate staff members who understand the complexities of balancing work and life while a person learns online. To help students complete their work when it is most convenient for them, the technical support and academic advising staff members are available through extended work hours. And they are easy to access by email, phone, and instant messaging.

Students at Penn State World Campus have a variety of other services available to them, such as online resources including advising, tutoring, exam proctoring, and career counseling; use of the University Libraries system, the 8th largest research library in North America, with a collection of more than 662 online research databases, 386,000 e-books, 105,000 scholarly journals, and 7.3 million print materials available for check-out; and links to communities and special services for military members and veterans, international students, alumni, corporate education, students with disabilities, and those transferring from other universities and colleges.

Financing and Tuition

World Campus tuition is calculated at a cost-per-credit rate based on the program chosen and the number of credits for which a student registers. In addition to the cost-per-credit, students are responsible for the information technology fee each semester of enrollment, as well as indirect costs such as books, DVDs, and other course materials.

Tuition is due when students register for classes, typically a month before the semester begins. However, a deferred payment plan is available for some programs. Penn State World Campus also provides other options for tuition payment such as third-party payments, tuition assistance for unemployed members of the workforce, and several military payment options.
