Overview

Department of Applied Mathematics and Statistics

The Department of Applied Mathematics and Statistics offers programs leading to the master's and Doctor of Philosophy degrees. Special strengths in applied mathematics and statistics include computational fluid dynamics, operations research, applied statistics, numerical analysis, and bioinformatics. All students receive a broad range of basic and advanced training in mathematics and applied mathematics.

The Ph.D. program consists of an individually designed selection of advanced courses followed by a program of research leading to a dissertation. Students are required to pass a written comprehensive examination and an oral preliminary examination.

The master's degree program focuses on specific mathematical sciences skills needed for a career as a teacher or an industrial mathematician.

All students receive personal attention and advising at all levels. There are numerous seminars and colloquia, featuring both distinguished guest speakers and Stony Brook faculty members. These present both accelerated background knowledge and ongoing research. The Department has close ties and joint activities with many units on campus, including the Institute for Theoretical Physics, Harriman College of Management, and the Computer Science Department as well as nearby Brookhaven National Laboratory and Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory.

Research Facilities

The Department is housed in the Mathematics Building. Each graduate student shares an office with at least one other student. The mathematics-physics library, located in an adjoining building, contains 50,000 books and subscribes to about 500 journals. The Laboratory for Parallel Computing has a custom-built 340 processor Galaxy parallel supercomputer, about one teraflops. The Department has over 300 Windows-based PCs, which are supported by over 50 Linux/UNIX servers on a fully switched 100M/bs network. There is a computer on every student's desk.

Student Group

The number of full-time graduate students in the Department of Applied Mathematics and Statistics is about 140. The Department awards about fifteen Ph.D. degrees and thirty M.S. degrees annually. In spring 2007, the Department had 160 students, of whom 93 percent were full-time, 35 percent were master's, and 65 percent were doctoral students; 45 percent were women.

Student Outcomes

Recent graduates have found positions as faculty members and postdoctoral fellows in academia, financial and risk analysts in the financial sector, biostatisticians in medical and research centers, research scientists in industrial and national laboratories, and actuaries in insurance companies. Their places of employment include Harvard University; New York University's Courant Institute; Rutgers University; Franklin and Marshall College; Worcester Polytechnic Institute; University of Notre Dame; Arizona State University; University of California, Irvine; Eli Lilly Pharmaceuticals; M. D. Anderson Cancer Center; Bell Labs; IBM Watson Research Center; Los Alamos National Laboratory; Chase Manhattan Bank; Bear, Stearns & Co.; American Express; Metropolitan Life Insurance Company; and the U.S. Department of Transportation.
