Overview

The Whitman Fulltime MBA

At Whitman, we believe a well-rounded education is about more than just business courses?it's about providing dynamic, relevant experiences that ensure our students build a competitive edge in the global marketplace. That's why the academically rigorous MBA. program is tailored for the students, to help them focus both on the theoretical and the practical and to build in-depth specializations to become leaders in their fields.

Chosen as the most global MBA program by "Bloomberg Businessweek," the Whitman School of Management has students who, together, represent the diversity of the world. The makeup of the MBA program is very diverse, with 60% from non-business undergrad degrees, a variety of work experiences and 10 unique countries represented.

Curriculum

The fulltime MBA is a 54 credit hour program, with 36 core course credits and 18 elective credits completed over a span of 2 years. Six distinct specializations are offered -- accounting, entrepreneurship, finance, marketing, real estate, and supply chain management -- allowing students to build experiences for deeper expertise or to complement existing business acumen.

Experiential Learning

Full-time MBA students build experiential portfolios through internships, consulting, specialized courses, community engagement, and other practical experiences that make them more valuable in the marketplace. After using planning tools offered through the Whitman Career Center, students identify gaps in knowledge or skill sets and build portfolios to enhance their skills. As part of the 18 elective credits, students complete a minimum of 6 approved experiential credits through at least 2 distinct experiences. The experiential learning program is unique in these aspects: Students can complete their requirements in a number of ways, including through internships for credit and course-based experiences are offered in electives versus in a capstone or immersion-based experience, allowing students to gain real world experience in their chosen fields.

Career Development

The Whitman Career Center works to build mutually beneficial partnerships with faculty members, alumni, and corporate partners to provide innovative programming and coaching that will empower students to reach their career aspirations with integrity and professionalism, preparing them for personal and professional growth. Over 120 companies participated in the Whitman Career Fairs and over 500 job postings were presented to graduate candidates through the OrangeLink job posting system and the MBA Focus Resume Database.

Beyond the Classroom

Whitman students are actively involved outside the classroom. The Whitman Graduate Student Organization aims to enrich the student experience through social, cultural, and community-oriented activities and events. Fifteen MBA students from the Whitman School of Management took 1st place at the annual Duke MBA Games this past year at Duke University in Durham, N.C., repeating their 2012 victory. The annual competition, which raises money for Special Olympics, culminates in a weekend-long competition among teams from the country's top MBA programs.

The Whitman Consulting Club nurtures, develops, and enhances the skills of members interested in pursuing careers in consulting. Students learn about consulting careers and the industry and also have opportunities to work on real projects. The E-Club is dedicated to encouraging the spirit of entrepreneurship among the Syracuse University student body and to supporting the needs of students who are interested in entrepreneurship. The E-Club is supported by the Whitman School's Entrepreneurship and Emerging Enterprises Department and the Falcone Center for Entrepreneurship. Whitman Women in Business seeks to foster women's involvement in the business community. The objective is to provide a forum for the Whitman community to engage in a dialogue about women's involvement in business and leadership, as well as seeking engagement in essential networking and mentoring opportunities. Whitman has its own chapter of Toastmasters International. Members develop their public speaking skills by delivering speeches to supportive club members who provide feedback. The group was formed in the fall of 2011 and officially chartered as "Master Toast" in February, 2013.

Each fall, the Whitman Graduate Student Organization (WGSO) holds its annual International Week. There is a talent show and movie festival throughout the week. The culminating event is a Food Festival where students have booths to highlight key aspects of their home countries and dress in traditional garb. Dishes were served representing cuisine from India, Vietnam, China, the Middle East, and more.

Diwali is the Indian festival of lights and again this fall, Professor Ravi Shukla's house was lit up with diyas in honor of this celebration. The evening featured an Indian dinner, learning new Bollywood dance steps, and singing some famous Hindi songs.

Global Experiences

Whitman students experience the changes in the global economy and business through courses that include international study trips in emerging markets. These trips offer unique learning opportunities in each city and feature guest faculty members, corporate visits, and cultural exploration.

Recent trips include:

- Santiago, Chile, where students visited the United States Commercial Service, Cencosud S.A., LAN Airlines, CEPAL, Citigroup Bank, Unilever, and Sewell Mining.

- Bangalore, India, where students toured Texas Instruments, Google, Hewlett Packard, and GE.

- Seoul, South Korea, where students visited Samsung Electronics, YG Entertainment, Amore Pacific, Hyundai Motors, and LG, in addition to a trip to the DMZ.

- Istanbul, Turkey, where students toured the Istanbul Stock Exchange, and visited Turkish Airlines, Bank Aysa, and Ulker.

Dual Degree Programs

There are many ways to combine the full-time MBA with a graduate degree in another Syracuse University school or college. The following are the most popular combinations:

- MBA/M.S. with the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications

- MBA/M.P.A. with the Maxwell School of Public Affairs

- MBA/J.D. with the College of Law

Sustainability Certificate

The Certificate in Advanced Studies in Sustainable Enterprise (CASSE) is open to students from a range of disciplines. The certificate is an outcome of a unique collaboration to provide curricula, outreach, and research on sustainable enterprise with the Whitman School, SUNY --ESF, SU's L.C. Smith College of Engineering, and the Syracuse Center of Excellence. The Aspen Institute's 2011-12 Beyond Grey Pinstripes report ranked the Whitman School among the top 100 in the world for integrating environmental, ethical, and social issues into graduate business education.

Military-Friendly Emphasis

Since 1952, the Defense Comptrollership Program in the Whitman School of Management has trained financial managers to handle multimillion dollar resources for the Department of Defense. Whitman encourages former members of the military to apply to its MBA programs, and participates in the US Veterans Affairs Yellow Ribbon Program to offer higher education benefits to post-9/11 servicemen and women and their dependents.
