Overview

The Whitman Full-time MBA

At The Martin J. Whitman School of Management, we believe that a well-rounded education is about more than just studying business courses. Its about providing dynamic and relevant experiences that ensure our students build a competitive edge in the global marketplace. Our academically rigorous MBA program is tailored for the students to help them focus both on the theoretical and the practical and to build in-depth specializations that will allow them to become leaders in their fields.

Chosen as the most global MBA program by "Bloomberg BusinessWeek," the Whitman School of Management has students who represent the diversity of the world. 60% of Whitman MBA students hold non-business undergraduate degrees, a variety of work experiences, and represent 10 unique countries.

Curriculum

The full-time MBA is a 54 credit hour program with 36 core course credits and 18 elective credits to be completed over a span of 2 years. The program offers 6 distinct specializations -- accounting, entrepreneurship, finance, marketing, real estate, and supply chain management -- allowing students to build experiences for deeper expertise and/or to complement existing business acumen.

Experiential Learning

Full-time MBA students build experiential learning portfolios through internships, consulting projects, specialized courses, community engagements, and other practical experiences that will make them more competitive in the marketplace. After using the planning tools offered by the Whitman Career Center, students identify gaps in knowledge or skill sets and build portfolios to enhance those skills. As part of their 18 elective credits, students complete a minimum of 6 approved experiential credits through at least 2 distinct experiences. The experiential learning program is unique in these aspects: students can complete their requirements in a number of ways such as internships for credit, course-based experiences, or a combination of the two.

Career Development

The Whitman Career Center works to build mutually beneficial partnerships with faculty members, alumni, and corporate partners. These partnerships provide innovative programming and coaching that will empower students to reach their career aspirations with integrity and professionalism, and prepare them for personal and professional growth. Typically, at least 120 companies participate in the Whitman Career Fairs and over 500 job postings are presented to graduate candidates through the OrangeLink job posting system and the MBA Focus Résumé Database.

Beyond the Classroom

Whitman students are actively involved outside the classroom. The Whitman Graduate Student Organization aims to enrich the student experience through social, cultural, and community-oriented activities and events. 15 MBA students from the Whitman School of Management won the 1st place at the annual Duke MBA Games held at Duke University in Durham, N.C., in 2013, repeating their 2012 victory. The annual competition raises money for Special Olympics and culminates in a weekend-long competition among teams from the country's top MBA programs.

The Whitman Consulting Club nurtures, develops, and enhances the skills of members interested in pursuing careers in consulting. Students learn about consulting careers and the industry and also have opportunities to work on real projects. The Entrepreneurship Club or E-Club is dedicated to encouraging the spirit of entrepreneurship among the Syracuse University student body and to supporting the needs of students who are interested in entrepreneurship. The E-Club is supported by the Whitman School's Entrepreneurship and Emerging Enterprises Department and the Falcone Center for Entrepreneurship. The objective of Whitman Women in Business is to provide a forum for the Whitman community to engage in dialogue about women's involvement in business and leadership as well as to offer essential networking and mentoring opportunities. Whitman also has its own chapter of Toastmasters International where members develop their public speaking skills by delivering speeches to other supportive club members and receive feedback. The group was formed in the fall of 2011 and officially chartered as "Master Toast" in February, 2013.

Each fall, the Whitman Graduate Student Organization (WGSO) holds its annual International Week. There is a talent show and movie festival throughout the week. The culminating event is a food festival where students have booths to highlight key aspects of their home countries and dress in traditional garb. In past years, we have had cuisines representing India, Vietnam, China, and the Middle East, to name a few.

Whitman School of Management also encourages the celebration of cultural festivals. For example, Diwali is the Indian festival of lights and again last year, Professor Ravi Shukla's house was lit up with diyas (or lamps) in honor of this celebration. The evening featured an Indian dinner, learning new Bollywood dance steps, and singing some famous Hindi songs. Earlier this year, Whitman students and staff celebrated the Chinese New Year with a variety of Chinese dishes.

Global Experiences

Whitman students experience the changes in the global economy and business through courses that include international study trips in emerging markets. These trips offer unique learning opportunities in the specific cities and feature guest faculty members, corporate visits, and cultural explorations.

Recent trips have included travel to the following locations:

- Santiago, Chile, where students visited the United States Commercial Service, Cencosud S.A., LAN Airlines, CEPAL, Citigroup Bank, Unilever, and Sewell Mining.

- Bangalore, India, where students toured Texas Instruments, Google, Hewlett Packard, and GE.

- Seoul, South Korea, where students visited Samsung Electronics, YG Entertainment, Amore Pacific, Hyundai Motors, and LG, in addition to a trip to the DMZ.

- Istanbul, Turkey, where students toured the Istanbul Stock Exchange, and visited Turkish Airlines, Bank Aysa, and Ulker.

Dual Degree Programs

There are many ways to combine the full-time MBA with a graduate degree from another Syracuse University school or college. The following are the most popular combinations:

- MBA/M.S. with the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications

- MBA/M.P.A. with the Maxwell School of Public Affairs

- MBA/J.D. with the College of Law

Sustainability Certificate

The Certificate of Advanced Study in Sustainable Enterprise (CASSE) is the outcome of a unique collaboration to provide curricula, outreach and research opportunities, about sustainable enterprises with the Whitman School of Management, SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry, The College of Engineering and Computer Science, and the Syracuse Center of Excellence The certificate is open to students from a range of disciplines with interests in sustainability and environmental concerns. The Whitman School was ranked by The Aspen Institute's 2011-12 "Beyond Grey Pinstripes" to be among the top 100 institutions in the world for integrating environmental, ethical, and social issues into graduate business education.

The Whitman Graduate Programs Office is committed to providing students with multiple ways to learn about and experience the Whitman community, learning culture, and academic programs. Providing best in class education comes not only from the degree itself, but from the experience that the students will have at the School. The commitment to providing students with opportunities to meet with faculty members, staff members, and students comes in many forms, and Whitman invites would-be students to join representatives of the school on campus, online, or on the road to discuss long-term career goals and build a Whitman experience.
