Overview

Master of Accountancy Program at the University of Alabama in Huntsville

Students in the Master of Accountancy (MAcc) program in the College of Business Administration at the University of Alabama in Huntsville complete a rigorous course of study that prepares them for successful accounting careers in the private, public, and not-for-profit sectors.

The MAcc program can be completed on a full-time or part-time basis and helps students prepare themselves for appropriate professional certifications such as CPA (Certified Public Accountant), CIA (Certified Internal Auditor), CMA (Certified Management Accountant), or CFE (Certified Fraud Examiner).

Master of Accountancy Program Curriculum

The Master of Accountancy program consists of 33 credit hours that include a minimum of 18 credit hours in accounting courses, a minimum of 12 credit hours of courses in other disciplines, and 3 credit hours in a "free elective" course. A maximum of 12 credit hours earned at another school can be transferred to the program.

The MAcc curriculum includes 9 hours of accounting core courses and 9 hours of accounting elective courses. It also has a thesis option that allows participating students to each eliminate a non-accounting elective course, thus reducing the minimum credit hours to 30.

Master of Accountancy Areas of Emphasis

Students have the flexibility to create curricula that reflect their backgrounds and professional goals. Three areas of emphasis that might fit their curriculum needs are CPA preparation, assurance and financial reporting (auditing), and taxation.

Master of Accountancy Prerequisites

The MAcc program includes 60 credit hours of prerequisites in basic skills, business core, and accounting courses. Prerequisites can be met with a bachelor's degree in accounting from AACSB-accredited institutions. They can also be satisfied with a bachelor's degree that includes a satisfactory (i.e., at least a "C") completion of the basic skills, business core, and accounting courses.
