The University at Buffalo School of Social Work

The University at Buffalo School of Social Work has created outstanding graduate programs that are ranked within the top 12% of the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE) accredited social work programs. In addition to providing several dual-degree programs that enable students to integrate social work study with disciplines relevant to the field, the school also offers individuals the opportunity to collaborate with faculty members and peers with diverse backgrounds, cultural experiences and worldviews.

University at Buffalo School of Social Work Podcast Series

One of many important features of the School of Social Work is its "inSocialWork" podcast series, which features conversations with social work professionals, interviews with researchers and information about emerging trends and best practices in the field.

The Master of Social Work Program at the University at Buffalo

The Master of Social Work (M.S.W.) program consists of an evidenced-based, "trauma-informed, human rights" curriculum. Students gain the expertise needed to identify, evaluate and improve the human and social circumstances that would otherwise lead to individual, family, group and community trauma. In addition, the M.S.W. program is now offering an online part time program to accommodate those who need the flexibility to earn degrees from a distance.

The M.S.W. curriculum consists of foundation, advanced and elective courses in addition to field placements. Following the completion of the foundation curriculum, students pursuing an advanced curriculum are provided a variety of intervention studies, advanced topics and elective courses that make it possible to tailor students' educations to meet practice area interests. Students may enroll in elective courses?including online courses?at any time.

B.A./M.S.W. Joint Degree Program

The Bachelor of Science/Master of Social Work degree program at the University at Buffalo is a very competitive program that prepares ambitious students for advanced social work practice. Students can earn both the B.S. and M.S.W. degrees in 5 years, during which they complete a minimum of 93 undergraduate credits and 60 credits in the M.S.W. program.

J.D./M.S.W. Dual Degree Program

Students who pursue the Juris Doctor/Master of Social Work (J.D./M.S.W.) degree program can earn these dual degrees in 4 years of study. Each student earns 90 credits in the law program and 60 in the M.S.W. program and must complete 2 field placements in the M.S.W. program, a law clinic, and 2 J.D./M.S.W. colloquia. The program enables students to integrate legal principles with social work theory and practice.

M.B.A./M.S.W. Dual Degree Program

The University at Buffalo also offers a 96-credit Master of Business Administration/Master of Social Work (M.B.A./M.S.W.) dual-degree program that enables students to earn both degrees in 3 years.

Students gain an in-depth understanding of the fundamentals of business management while developing the expertise needed for social work practice and administration.

M.P.H./M.S.W. Dual Degree Program

The UB dual Master of Public Health/Master of Social Work (M.P.H./M.S.W.) degree program includes 37 credits in public health courses and 51 in social work courses. This program allows students to integrate the principles and practices of 2 similar but unique perspectives to addressing social issues. The disciplines share similar positions regarding prevention, community and special concern for vulnerable populations. Student can now choose from 2 M.P.H. concentrations: Health Services Administration and Community Health and Health Behavior.

M.S.W./Ph.D. Dual Degree Program

The M.S.W. and Ph.D. degree programs in social welfare are now available in a dual-degree track. Combining these degrees allows students to complete the trauma informed and human rights perspective M.S.W. curriculum, and then move directly into doctoral level research work.

Doctoral Program in Social Welfare at the University at Buffalo

Students in the Ph.D. in Social Welfare program design individual plans of study that may include courses in political science, psychology, sociology, law, education, public health, urban planning, and public health and health professions.

The curriculum, which may be completed in 2 years, includes 47 credits and consists of professional seminars, independent study, research methods courses, research internships and dissertation preparation.

Students receive generous support during their time in the program, including financial assistance, professional guidance and career-placement assistance. That 85% of graduates are placed in research and academic positions throughout the country speaks to the university's dedication to social work students' success.

Dedicated Faculty

The internationally recognized University at Buffalo School of Social Work faculty consists of a diverse community of teachers, scholars and activists for change who are committed to and share a common passion for community-university partnerships in research and practice. The Buffalo Center for Social Research

In 2005, the University at Buffalo School of Social Work chose to combine the Center for Research on Urban Social Work Practice and the Center for Research on Children and Youth, resulting in the establishment of the Buffalo Center for Social Research (BCSR). This center facilitates Social Work faculty members' and graduate students' research and the discovery and advancement of social work knowledge through community partnerships and interdisciplinary research. Resources and functions of the center include all phases of grant development, from project design to fiscal analysis, full in-house grant submission process, office and interview space for project use, a data analysis laboratory, grant and project management, and research assistantship opportunities for graduate students.

The Buffalo Center for Social Research houses various institutes and centers where interdisciplinary researchers with similar interests collaborate to examine critical research questions through external funding. The Institute on Trauma and Trauma-Informed Care (ITTIC) oversees independent studies, field units, and funded research projects and grants that provide evaluation, trauma specific treatment interventions, training, technical assistance, and consultation for organizations regarding trauma-informed care. The ITTIC's community partnerships include the American Red Cross; Catholic Charities and Gateway-Longview, Inc.; the Center for Veterans and Veteran Family Services; the Community Health Foundation of Western & Central New York; and New Directions Youth and Family Services. The Program Evaluation Center (PEC) aims to develop evaluation strategies to investigate what interventions work and in what circumstances within human services. The evaluation strategies developed by the PEC are currently being used in human service organizations in the United States, United Kingdom and Finland. The UB/Amrita Social and Behavioral Sciences Research Institute (UBARI) was established in May 2010 as a collaboration between the University at Buffalo School of Social Work and Amrita University in Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu, India. The purpose of UBARI is to initiate, encourage, support and conduct interdisciplinary joint research in the social and behavioral sciences as it relates to areas of need, such as HIV/AIDS, trauma, extreme events and disaster management, and the economic and social advancement of India. All centers and institutes under the BCSR have a number of collaborations and joint research projects under way.

In addition, the BCSR also hosts a monthly Grand Rounds. These events take place on Friday mornings at the Buffalo Center for Social Research on the University at Buffalo's South Campus and feature scholars and researchers from both inside and outside of the School of Social Work. Presenters from the 2012-2013 school year include Dr. Lisa Butler and Dr. Deborah Waldrop of the University of Buffalo School of Social Work; Dr. Sandhya Limaye of the Tata Institute of Social Sciences in Mumbai, India; and Dr. Karen Sowers, Dean and Beaman Professor of the University of Tennessee College of Social Work.

There are several current BCSR projects under way with areas of research including evidence-based practice, mental health, gender and sexuality, aging and end of life decision-making, trauma and trauma history, and veterans. Alumni and Employment Opportunities

The alumni of the UB School of Social Work build successful careers in a wide variety of fields, including addictions, aging, anti-poverty, child welfare, criminal justice, disabilities, health, mental health, social developments, social justice and trauma. The graduates work with individuals in a number of settings: schools, hospitals, prisons, the military, clinics, agencies, government and communities. There is no other degree that encompasses the number of post-graduate options as does a Master's in Social Work degree. With the University at Buffalo School of Social Work's course of study, students are able to meet and surpass their learning goals by creating their own individualized curricula that will propel them into the careers and populations of their choosing.

In addition to the multitude of resources available to current students, the School of Social Work also provides career development with the Office of Continuing Education, which provides information for social workers on upcoming workshops, certificate programs and special projects in evidence-based mental health.
