Nationally Recognized Graduate School Offers Degrees in Array of Academic Subject Areas

Students searching for a specialized graduate degree program should review the long list of subjects and disciplines available through the University of Memphis graduate school. The university proudly provides nationally recognized programs in an array of subjects. The graduate school confers master's degrees 54 academic subject areas from six colleges and three schools within the university umbrella. The Doctor of Philosophy degree is offered in 20 areas through the College of Arts and Sciences; Fogelman College of Business and Economics; College of Communication and Fine Arts; the College of Education, Health and Human Sciences; Herff College of Engineering; the School of Communication Sciences and Disorders, and the School of Public Health. The degrees of Doctor of Audiology, Doctor of Education, and Doctor of Musical Arts are awarded by the School of Communication Sciences and Disorders, the College of Education, Health and Human Sciences, and the College of Communication and Fine Arts, respectively. The College of Education, Health and Human Sciences also awards the degree of Education Specialist.

Graduate certificates are also offered in 34 areas: African American Literature, Applied Lean Leadership, Artist Diploma in Music, Autism Studies, Business Information Assurance, Business Project Management, Career and College Counseling, Cognitive Science, College Teaching, Community College Teaching & Leadership, Disabilities Studies, Entrepreneurial Journalism, Family Nurse Practitioner, Geographic Information Systems, Healthcare Informatics Leadership, Imaging and Signal Processing, Information Assurance, Instructional Design and Technology, Liberal Studies, Literacy Leadership and Coaching, Local Government Management, Museum Studies, Nursing Administration, Nursing Education, Nursing Informatics, Packaging Engineering, Philanthropy and Nonprofit Leadership, Qualitative Studies in Education, Quantitative Studies in Educational Research, Software Testing, STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) Teacher Leadership, Teaching English as a Second Language, Urban Education, and Women's and Gender Studies. The Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) Certificate program is for students who have a Master of Science in Nursing degree and are interested in taking the national certification exam to practice as a Family Nurse Practitioner without requiring them to complete a second master's degree. The other certificate programs are intended for students with a bachelor's degree. All the certificate programs provide the students with competitive knowledge and skills.

In many of the academic areas, students apply for teaching positions and research assistantships that fall within the scope of their graduate degree programs. Whether a student is working toward a Master of Fine Arts or Doctor of Education, knowledge gained in the program prepares them to take leadership roles in their fields. A student obtaining an MBA in Business Administration and one receiving a Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology will both receive individualized faculty direction as they prepare for career aspirations.

The faculty of the graduate school recognizes the valuable contribution students make to research and instruction. The research of students seeking graduate degrees is presented at a Student Research Forum, where students showcase their work through formal presentations. The forum gives students a supportive setting, outside the class or lab, in which to develop their communication skills.

Research Facilities Foster Collaborative Efforts that Drive Innovative Ideas for Today and Tomorrow

The University of Memphis conducts research that contributes to solving the problems of our time through various focus areas, including: biotechnology, community hazards, community initiatives, health care, and learning technologies. Within the health care category, the university's research program seeks to support health care policy decisions and prevention programs. Genomic studies advance faculty research and graduate education with an emphasis upon functional genomics.
