Overview

The MS in Cybersecurity program at Hood College is designed to provide students with a rigorous academic program and cutting-edge instruction, while partnering with industry and government institutions to offer hands-on experience. Situated near Washington, D.C., and Baltimore, Hood College is in a strategic geographic position to supply real-world opportunities to students and bring a skilled workforce to the area.

The MS in Cybersecurity builds on the college's existing graduate certificate in cybersecurity, and is designed to address the core subject areas and skill sets identified in the Cybersecurity Workforce Framework by the National Initiative for Cybersecurity Careers and Studies (NICCS).

The program prepares students for advanced cybersecurity positions by offering a comprehensive cybersecurity education that includes (1) exposure to the theoretical foundations of cybersecurity, (2) practical experience in the technical aspects computing, and (3) training in real-world cybersecurity settings.

The program is accessible to both technical and non-technical students with bachelor's degrees. Students without prior computing background can enter the degree program by enrolling in the two prerequisite foundation courses that introduce computing fundamentals. Students will then progress through the program by taking <link: http://www.hood.edu/Graduate-School/Programs/Cybersecurity,-M-S/Program-Overview.html> 10 courses. These courses cover topics including telecommunications and networking, computer forensics, information security, network security, cryptography, security policies, ethics and law, information assurance, and penetration testing. The program includes a Capstone experience course that allows students to work on cybersecurity by being embedded in regional high-tech organizations and research labs or complete a significant research project.

Part-time or full-time

By taking one or two courses a semester, students can complete the 30-credit program in three years. Or as full-time students, they can take combination of hybrid and on-campus classes and graduate in 18 months. Both formats provide instruction from highly qualified faculty and adjunct instructors with proven professional Cybersecurity experience.

Admissions Requirements

For students applying to the masters in cybersecurity program, please submit the following to the Graduate School: (a) One copy of official transcripts from each institution attended, and, (b) Résumé/CV that provides educational and professional experience

This program is designed for students who have a solid background in computer science or information technology, including database and telecommunications concepts, either through formal study or professional experience. Students who do not have the necessary background will be required to complete one or both of the foundation courses in addition to ensure they are well prepared for the required coursework. The program director determines the required foundation courses based on a thorough evaluation of transcripts and other supporting documents.

Computing and Cybersecurity at Hood College

Hood introduced its first computer science course in 1972. Today, its Department of Computer Science & Information Technology offers several undergraduate (B.S. in Computer Science, minor in computer science, and minor in web development) and graduate programs (M.S. in Computer Science, M.S. in Information Technology, M.S. in Management Information Systems, and Certificate in Cybersecurity) The graduate cybersecurity certificate program was developed in 2009 upon consultation with regional government and industry partners, including Fort Detrick, Department of the Army, Bechtel, BP, Life Sciences Corp., and Lockheed Martin. Graduates from the programs find jobs at top regional and national industry and government organizations, finding positions in cybersecurity as computer security engineers, security consultants, penetration testers, and auditors.
