MCAT FAQs

  • The Medical College Admission Test, or MCAT, assesses mastery of skills essential for medical school success. The MCAT test is administered by the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC), and is a standardized, multiple-choice exam. Almost all medical schools in the United States and many in Canada require MCAT test scores for medical school applicants.
  • The MCAT test determines applicants’ problem-solving skills, critical thinking, and knowledge of scientific concepts. It is broken into four sections: Physical Sciences, Biological Sciences, Verbal Reasoning, and the Writing Sample.
  • The MCAT takes about 6 hours and 15 minutes to complete, but plan for 7 hours and 30 minutes with included breaks.
  • Yes. It’s common for students to retake the test to earn a higher score. However, it’s essential to remember that there are limits on how many times an individual can take the exam. For example, there is a lifetime limit of seven MCAT testing attempts. Moreover, you can only take the MCAT test three times in one year or four times over a two-year period. If you register for the test and miss your appointment or void the test scores, this counts towards your lifetime limit.
  • You will receive a scaled score based on your MCAT test results. The MCAT scores range from 118 to 132. Your answers on the MCAT will be converted into a scaled score through a process the AAMC refers to as equating. Since many different versions of the MCAT are administered at any given time, scores are scaled to account for variations in difficulty levels from one test version to another.
  • MCAT scores are typically released within 30 to 35 days of the test. The AAMC website reports that most medical schools will accept MCAT scores for up to three years from the actual test day.
  • In 2021-2022, applicants accepted into MD-granting medical schools had an average MCAT score of 511.9.
  • While there are no official prerequisite classes before the MCAT test, it’s helpful to take introductory college courses in the following subjects before test day:
    • Biology
    • Organic Chemistry
    • General Chemistry
    • Biochemistry
    • Physics
    • Psychology and Sociology
  • Using an MCAT study guide is helpful when preparing for the test. With Peterson’s multiple practice tests, you’ll have hours of experience answering sample questions, helping you further learn the material that will be asked on the MCAT. Create an MCAT study schedule to help you stay focused and on track.
  • The AAMC recommends developing a comprehensive study plan ahead of test day. Many students use traditional methods such as preparing MCAT flashcards and study notes. With Peterson’s multiple practice tests, you’ll have hours of experience answering sample questions and learning from your mistakes before taking the exam. Once you know you intend to apply to medical schools, you should begin making an MCAT study plan. The more experience you have with sample questions for the different sections of the MCAT, the better prepared you will be on test day.
  • According to the AAMC official website, the MCAT exam is offered multiple times yearly from January through September. You’ll need to take the test before applying to medical schools.
  • You can take the MCAT at one of hundreds of locations in the U.S., Canada, and worldwide. The MCAT test is offered multiple times throughout the year, and you can take it up to 3 times per year. Register for the MCAT on the Association of American Medical Colleges website.
