Civil and environmental engineering graduate degrees at a top-ranking Tennessee university

Tennessee Technological University (TTU), a top-ranking regional public university, offers a Master of Science (MS) in Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE) and a PhD in Engineering with a concentration in civil and environmental engineering.

The CEE department at Tennessee Tech furnishes students with the basic and applied knowledge and skills needed to earn licenses. This foundation allows graduates to address critical issues in city planning, including pollution control, water resource development, wastewater treatment, and transportation.

Outstanding research in Civil and Environmental Engineering

The American Concrete Institute (ACI) has granted the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Tennessee Tech the Outstanding University Award. Tennessee Technological University conducts research in conjunction with Oak Ridge National Laboratory and TTU's three centers of excellence, the Center for Manufacturing Research, Center for Energy Systems Research, and Center for the Management, Utilization, and Protection of Water Resources.

A faculty of active researchers, dedicated teachers, and practitioners

Tennessee Tech chemical engineering faculty are at the leading edge of research in a number of fields including

- Construction materials

- Urban transit systems and traffic flow and design

- Biological wastewater treatment and bioenergy production

- Structural disaster prevention

- Engineering economics

Professor Steven Click, for example, recent research investigates traffic signal based interchange treatments and real-time performance measures for arterial streets. His studies have been funded by the Tennessee Department of Transportation and the Mark Blackwell Rural Transportation Agency. As education, Professor Click has explored the use of Tablet PCs and computer-based homework in upper level courses.

Professor Tania Datta is a widely-published researcher in the fields of biological wastewater treatment, water quality management, and environmental microbiology, while Professor R. Craig Henderson has participated in executive subcommittees to establish building code requirements for masonry while pursuing research in related areas of materials and structural engineering.

The MS in Civil and Environmental Engineering

Students in the MS program in CEE at TTU complete 24 credit hours of courses. Generally, at least 15 credit hours of coursework are taken within the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering. Students in the thesis track complete at least 6 credit hours of thesis research.

Graduate students can also choose to pursue a master degree in CEE without a thesis. Students in the non-theses option receive a Master of Science in Civil Engineering (MSCE) after 34 credit hours of coursework. MSCE student take three credit hours of project work and one credit- hour of graduate seminars in CEE in addition to 30 credit hours of course work.

The Civil and Environmental Engineering curriculum

In addition to foundational courses in materials engineering, structural design, and statistical inference, the CEE department at Tennessee Technology offers graduate students a wide range of course offerings that ensure that they emerge from the program with practical high level skills and knowledge that they will be able to take with them into the workplace. These courses include:

- Bridge Design

- Solid and Hazardous Waste Management

- Engineering Hydrology

- Water Resources Engineering

- Pavement Design

- Traffic Engineering

- Highway Engineering

- Transportation Planning

- Masonry Design

- Statistical Inference for Engineers

- Multiscale Analysis of Concrete

- Traffic Control Systems

- Probabilistic Methods in Hydroscience

- Hydrometeorology

- Transportation Demand Analysis

- Open-Channel Hydraulics

- Environmental Engineering Unit Operations and Processes

- Remote Sensing

Advanced 7000-level courses explore topics in concrete durability and prestressed concrete design, travel demand modeling, traffic flow theory, theory of plates and shells, computational models, finite elements analysis, and structural dynamics.

The BS/MS fast track program

Undergraduate students in their junior or senior year with at least 90 credit hours of coursework and a GPA of 3.25 overall and 3.55 in CEE courses can apply for the BS/MS fast track program.

The PhD in Engineering with Civil and Environmental Engineering Concentration

Students who have obtained the MS in Civil and Environmental Engineering, complete an additional 48 credit hours, beyond the 30 credit-hour MS program, to obtain a PhD. These include 18 to 24 credit hours of coursework and 24 to 30 credit hours of research and dissertation.

Students who are admitted to the PhD program directly after their BS complete 72 credit hours. These include 42 to 48 credit hours of coursework, including the four core courses required for the completion of the MS, and 24 to 30 hours of research and dissertation.
