Huggins-Quarles Award

Description

The Huggins-Quarles Award is given annually to graduate students of color to assist them with expenses related to travel to research collections for the completion of the PhD dissertation. These awards were established to promote greater diversity in the historical profession. Applicants must be advanced ABD, defined as at minimum a graduate student with ABD designation in their 5th year in a PhD program. The applicant's dissertation must focus on U.S. history. One complete copy of each application clearly labeled "2025 Huggins-Quarles Award Entry," must be emailed directly to the committee co-chairs. Applicants must submit the following items in one PDF document and in the following order: cover letter, which should indicate the candidate's progress on the dissertation, including ABD status; CV; project abstract that consists of a dissertation proposal, which should include a definition of the project, an explanation of the project's significance and contribution to the field, and a description of the most important primary sources; and the itemized budget explaining travel and research plans. Each application must also include a letter from the dissertation adviser attesting to the student's status and the ways in which the award will facilitate the completion of the dissertation project. Advisers should email their letters separately to the committee co-chairs. The application and required materials must be submitted to Nicole Guidotti-Hernandez, co-chair and Derek Taira, co-chair. Please visit the award's website or contact the Organization of American Historians for more information.
