- The CLEP Precalculus exam measures your knowledge of specific properties of the following types of functions: linear, quadratic, absolute value, square root, polynomial, rational, exponential, logarithmic, trigonometric, and inverse trigonometric. The College Level Examination Program, or the CLEP, is a collection of standardized tests that measure your knowledge of certain subjects. Students can earn college credit at thousands of colleges and universities by scoring satisfactorily on the computer-based CLEP exams.
- The Precalculus CLEP exam covers the following topics: Algebraic Expressions, Equations, and Inequalities (20%); Functions: Concept, Properties, and Operations (15%); Representations of Functions: Symbolic, Graphical, and Tabular (30%); Analytic Geometry (10%); Trigonometry and its Applications (15%); and Functions as Models (10%). The CLEP Precalculus exam allows you to use a graphing calculator. It is a multiple-choice test with two main sections. Section I is 50 minutes long and will have 25 questions. Section II is 40 minutes long and will have 23 questions. The exam will be 90 minutes long and will have 48 questions. You cannot use a graphing calculator for section II of the exam, only section I. Most questions are multiple-choice, but some require entering a numerical number. For the Precalculus CLEP exam, you will be tested on the following subjects: linear, quadratic absolute value, square root, inverse trigonometric, piecewise-defined functions, analytic geometry, and more. You will be tested on these concepts and your ability to recognize and perform operations and transformations on functions presented symbolically, graphically, or in tabular form. Trigonometry counts for most of the test, so have ample time to study for those sections.
- Those who aren’t familiar with the types of functions featured on the Precalculus CLEP exam may find the test difficult. The pass rate for the Precalculus CLEP test is 63%.
- Those who have taken a beginning course in or are familiar with the content of precalculus are perfect candidates for taking the Precalculus CLEP exam. Students seeking college credit are encouraged to take CLEP exams. Home-schoolers, military personnel, and adult learners are typical CLEP test takers, but exams are also open to college and high school students. CLEP exams are helpful for students seeking higher education outside of the traditional classroom.
- A scaled score is calculated based on multiple-choice questions and essay scores that range from 20 to 80. Based on this score, the student earns an A, B, C, or D. The letter grade is applied to your college course equivalent. Usually, a score of 50 is a good CLEP exam score, which earns you credits for a C. To get a B-level score, you will need 61.
- CLEP exams test you on the equivalent of an entire college semester’s curriculum in approximately 90 minutes. Peterson’s Precalculus CLEP prep prepares you for the questions you can expect on the exam. While everyone is different, Peterson’s recommends at least 6 weeks of preparation.
