- The College Level Examination Program, or the CLEP, is a collection of standardized tests that measure your knowledge of certain subjects. Students can earn college credit at thousands of colleges and universities by scoring satisfactorily on a computer-based CLEP exam. Learn more about credit by exam.
- The CLEP comprises 34 exams in five subject categories: History and Social Sciences, Literature and Composition, Science and Mathematics, Business, and World Languages. Each exam can take 90-120 minutes.
- CLEP tests use scaled scores based on multiple-choice questions and essays ranging from 20 to 80. Based on this score, the student earns an A, B, C, or D. The letter grade is applied to your college course equivalent. The American Council on Education recommends you earn a CLEP score of 50 or higher to earn credit.
- Anyone seeking college credit can take CLEP exams. Home-schoolers, military personnel, and adult learners are typical CLEP test takers, but exams are also open to college and high school students.
