PCAT FAQs
- The Pharmacy College Admissions Test, or PCAT, is a standardized test that determines if applicants are qualified to enter pharmacy colleges and schools. The PCAT exam measures the general academic ability and scientific knowledge necessary for the commencement of pharmaceutical education.
- The PCAT test measures your scientific knowledge in math, verbal, reading comprehension, writing, and overall critical thinking skills. There are 192 multiple-choice questions on the PCAT test with one writing topic. It has five sections to the PCAT exam:
- Writing: You’ll be given a prompt related to a health issue, a science issue, or a social, cultural or political issue. You’ll need to present a solution to the prompted problem in essay form. You will be scored on how well your explanation of the solution is written.
- Biological Processes: covers general biology, microbiology, human anatomy and physiology
- Chemical Processes: covers general chemistry, organic chemistry, basic biochemistry processes
- Critical Reading: covers comprehension, analysis, evaluation
- You’ll have approximately 3 hours and 40 minutes to complete 192 multiple-choice questions and an essay. You’ll be given an optional 15-minute break after your chemical process subtest. You’ll be given 45 minutes to complete the biological processes section, 45 minutes to complete the chemical processes section, 50 minutes to complete the critical reading section, and 50 minutes to complete the quantitative reasoning section.
- Many pharmacy schools look for PCAT scores above a certain level. The PCAT test score range is between 200-600. The median score for the PCAT test is 400. Test takers in the 90th percentile typically receive a PCAT score of 430. Pharmacy schools typically require a PCAT score of over 400.
- Scoring high on the PCAT test will be your ticket into pharmacy school. This is why PCAT prep is essential. One of the best ways to prepare for the PCAT test is by taking online practice tests. PCAT practice tests will help you familiarize yourself with what will be asked on the PCAT exam, and great practice for timing. Peterson’s test prep gives you access to 3 full-length online PCAT practice tests.
- Before taking the PCAT test, you’ll want to study the section materials steadily for a year and more vigorously the closer you get to exam day.
