DO YOU HAVE ANY QUESTIONS?
Praxis FAQs
- The Praxis I Exam is one of several tests prospective teachers must take in most states. There are state requirements for every state. The exam measures knowledge of basic academic topics. This is a common first step in the licensing procedure. Many colleges and universities accept this exam to help prepare their students for student teaching and becoming licensed teachers. The praxis is usually required during one of your education classes.
- The exam evaluates your reading, writing, and mathematics skills. These test sections can be taken separately or all at once. The test includes multiple-choice and essay questions. This test is the English language and will test your content knowledge and skills in three main categories: reading, mathematics, and writing. The writing content category is split into two sections: the multiple-choice section and the essay section. Test takers will have to write two essays within a certain allotted time. These questions will help determine if you understand the principles of learning and teaching to qualify you to teach early childhood and beyond.
- Each section of the Praxis I Exam is scored on a 100 – 200-point scale. You will receive a pass or fail status for each section based on your score. While passing scores depend on your state, most states have the exact score requirements. Generally, 150 is a passing score for the math section, 156 is a passing score for the reading section, and 162 is a passing score for the writing section. You will typically receive your score report a few weeks after you take your exam.
- Prospective students in most states must take the exam to acquire a teaching license or teaching credential. The exam is usually taken before the student begins student teaching. This is usually one of the first steps when a student wants to become a teacher.
- If taking the test sections separately, each session takes 2 hours. If you take the entire test simultaneously, the session takes 5 hours. Either way, you’re covering a lot of information to determine if you can move forward in acquiring your teaching license. Peterson’s is here to help you excel on the test, but you must work! Reviewing content and familiarizing yourself with the test structure is key. While everyone is different and will have different needs, Peterson’s recommends at least 6 weeks of preparation for test day. You know your needs best, so give yourself ample time to study and prepare for your praxis exam! Use each subsection of the practice test to set the pace for your entire study. Review the detailed explanations to every question to ensure you feel fully prepared for your praxis exam.
- Praxis I exams are computer-based and administered at testing sites. Visit the official Educational Testing Service website to register and for testing locations.
