  • The AP English Language and Composition exam will test your knowledge of literary topics and foundations. You must show your ability to analyze texts and create written arguments based on your evaluations.
  • There are two sections on the AP English Language and Composition exam. The first section consists of 45 multiple-choice questions asking you to read and analyze nonfiction work. You will also be asked to “read like a writer” and think about revisions to stimulus texts. You will have 1 hour to complete this section. The second section is a free response section with 3 questions. Three categories make up the 3 questions. These categories are synthesis questions, where you will be asked to write an argument with at least 3 sources to support your thesis; a rhetorical analysis, where you will examine how the writer’s language choice plays a part in the intended meaning and purpose of the writing; and an argument where you will need to create an evidence-based argument to a prompted topic. You will have 2 hours and 15 minutes, including a 15-minute reading period.
  • The difficulty level of the AP English Language and Composition exam can vary, but it is generally moderately difficult.
