- The US AP History exam tests your knowledge of the cultural, economic, political, and social developments that have shaped the United States from 1491 to the present day. The AP exam is a collection of standardized tests that measure students’ knowledge of certain subjects. Students can earn college credit at thousands of colleges and universities by earning a satisfactory score, usually a 3, on an AP exam.
- AP US History chapters cover the following topics:
- 1491-1607: The society of Native Americans, European explorers of the Americas
- 1607-1754: The colonies established in the New World by the Dutch, Spanish, British, and French
- 1754-1800: The American Revolution and formation of the United States
- 1800-1848: The political, cultural, and economic development of a young United States
- 1844-1877: The expansion of the United States and the Civil War

- AP exams test you on the equivalent of an entire college semester’s curriculum in 2 – 3 hours. - You will have 60 minutes, including 15 minutes, to read seven documents. While this may seem overwhelming, here are four steps to answering the DBQ:
- Read the analysis prompt. Categorize and organize the documents to help you prepare for your essay.
- Focus on your response and building a solid thesis.
- Write out your response, making sure to include arguments that support your thesis.
- Review your response. Ensure that your writing is concise, error-free, and meets all DBQ requirements.
- Schools that offer AP classes will administer the US AP History exam by collecting your fee of $94, ordering the test, and arranging a test-taking location and time. You will have a proctor in the room and will likely take the exam with other class members. Talk to your teacher, guidance counselor, or contact the AP coordinator at your high school.
