AP World History FAQs
- The AP World History exam is one of nearly 40 different Advanced Placement (AP) exams administered by The College Board. It is intended for high school students who have completed the AP World History course and want to earn college credit for introductory-level history classes.
- The exam assesses student mastery of the six course themes comprising the curriculum of the AP World History course, including:
- Humans and the Environment
- Cultural Developments and Interactions
- Governance
- Economic Systems
- Social Interactions and Organization
- Technology and Innovation
- Topics span the periods of 1200 to present day.
- Questions are written to cover specific content from the nine distinct units of the AP World History course:
- The Global Tapestry
- Network of Exchange
- Land-Based Empires
- Transoceanic Interconnections
- Revolutions
- Consequences of Industrialization
- Global Conflict
- Cold War and Decolonization
- Globalization
- The World History AP exam has two sections (section I and section II) and three question types: multiple-choice, short-answer, and free-response. There are 55 multiple-choice questions, 3 short-answer questions, and 2 free-response items.
- The entire exam lasts 3 hours and 15 minutes. Here is the breakdown for each section:
- Multiple Choice Section: 55 minutes
- Short Answer Section: 40 minutes
- Free Response Section: 1 hour 40 minutes
- The multiple-choice and free response sections are worth 40 percent of your score, and the short answer section is worth 20%. Your results will be analyzed, and a composite score of 1-5 will be granted.
- While there is no official passing score, a score of 3 or higher usually results in some college credit awarded. However, each college and university has its own policy regarding credit for AP scores. Students who take the exam in May will usually receive their score reports by early to mid-July.
- You will have one minute to answer each of the 55 questions on the multiple-choice section of the exam. The questions are usually grouped into three or four sets and address a primary or secondary source such as a map, graph, or other image.
- For this section, you must answer one document-based question and write one extended essay. The document-based question includes a 15-minute reading period and will address historical topics and events spanning 1450 to 2001. The extended essay will include three periods students must choose from: 1200 to 1750, 1450-1900, and 1750-2001. Both question types require a high-level analysis of historical evidence.
- The short answer section of the exam addresses all four historical periods featured in the AP World History curriculum. The first two questions are required and include a stimulus or prompt. Students may answer either question 3 or 4, focusing on historical developments and processes between 1200 and 1750 and 1750 and 2001, respectively.
- To register for AP World History and other AP exams, visit The College Board’s website and log in to My AP. You’ll need to join your class section online before registration.
- Your specific deadline will vary depending on the school you attend, but you can expect to register during the Fall.
- If you don’t get the desired score, you can retake the test as many times as you want. However, the exam is only offered once per year.
