CST Exam FAQs

  • The Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) exam, administered by the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA), evaluates a candidate’s skills and expertise in patient care and surgical procedures.
  • The CST exam consists of the following topics:
    1. Pre-operative Preparation
    2. Intra-operative Procedures
    3. Post-operative Procedures
    4. Administrative and Personnel
    5. Equipment Sterilization and Maintenance
    6. Anatomy and Physiology
    7. Advanced Principles of Microbiology
    8. Surgical Pharmacology and Anesthesia
  • There are 175 multiple-choice questions on the CST exam, 150 of which are scored. You have four hours to complete the CST exam.
  • To be eligible for the CST exam, candidates must:
    1. Have completed a program accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) or Accrediting Bureau of Health Education Schools (ABHES)
    2. Provide a copy of your graduation certificate, a notarized letter from the program director stating your name, graduation date, and type of degree awarded, or transcript
  • Before testing, candidates must apply, be determined eligible, and make an appointment to take the examination with the testing agency at a testing center. The exams are by appointment only. Each testing center has its own schedule; however, most centers are available six days a week, twice a day.
  • The passing score on the CST exam is 102 out of the 150 scored questions. Score reports will be provided to all exam candidates.
  • Candidates can test three times during a calendar year.
  • Peterson’s test prep offers three full-length online CST practice tests. Our test prep also gives you the resources you need, including a CST study guide with tips for how to prepare for the CST exam.
  • Peterson’s three full-length CST practice tests are timed, simulating the actual CST exam. Taking practice tests may help ease anxiety and bridge gaps in course content.
