DO YOU HAVE ANY QUESTIONS?

CLEP Intro Psychology FAQs

  • The Introductory Psychology CLEP exam measures your knowledge of psychology’s concepts, principles, and basics. The College Level Examination Program, or the CLEP, is a collection of standardized tests that measure your knowledge of certain subjects. Students can earn college credit at thousands of colleges and universities by scoring satisfactorily on the computer-based CLEP exams.
  • The CLEP Psychology exam covers the following topics:
    • History, Approaches, and Methods (11–12%)
    • Biological Bases of Behavior (8–9%)
    • Sensation and Perception (7–8%); States of Consciousness (5–6%)
    • Learning (8–9%)
    • Cognition (8–9%)
    • Motivation and Emotion (5–6%)
    • Developmental Psychology Across the Lifespan (8–9%)
    • Personality (7–8%)
    • Psychological disorders and health (8–9%)
    • Treatment of psychological disorders (6–7%)
    • Social Psychology (9–10%)
    • Statistics, Tests, and Measurement (3–4%)
  • If you’ve taken an introductory course in psychology, taking the CLEP Psychology exam is a great opportunity to earn college credit. By taking CLEP exams, you can apply prior or current knowledge to get a head start on your higher education pathway, enhance your degree, and save time and money on courses. Students can take a variety of exams on entry-level collegiate topics to bypass these courses in college or university. Does this sound familiar? That may be because many students take CLEP tests with DSST tests. While both offer college credit, CLEP tests offer testing in mainstream subjects, while DSST test subjects are more specialized.
  • The Introductory Psychology CLEP exam consists of 95 questions to be answered in 90 minutes.
  • Each college and university has its own CLEP policy, and each exam is weighed differently. Still, the American Council on Education (ACE) recommends that schools award 3 semester hours of college credit for a score of 50 or higher on the Introductory Psychology CLEP exam.
  • A scaled score, based on multiple-choice questions and essay scores ranging from 20 to 80, is calculated. The student then earns an A, B, C, or D based on this score. The letter grade is applied to the equivalent college course.
  • A score of 50 on the CLEP Introductory Psychology exam, the equivalent of a course grade of C, will give you three credits.
  • Those who have taken a beginning course in or are familiar with introductory psychology content are perfect candidates for the Introductory Psychology CLEP exam. Students seeking college credit are encouraged to take CLEP exams. Home-schoolers, military personnel, and adult learners are typical CLEP test takers, but exams are also open to college and high school students. CLEP exams are helpful for students seeking higher education outside of the traditional classroom.
  • There is no penalty for wrong guesses on the CLEP exam. Using your best educated guess is better than leaving an answer blank.
  • CLEP exams test you on the equivalent of an entire college semester’s curriculum in approximately 90 minutes. Peterson’s Intro to Psychology CLEP prep prepares you for the questions you can expect on the exam. While everyone is different, Peterson’s recommends at least 6 weeks of preparation.
  • Peterson’s provides all the resources you need, including a CLEP psychology study guide, three practice tests, flashcards to test your knowledge of psychology terms, and other materials to help elevate your CLEP Psychology study.
  • Peterson’s offers three full-length CLEP Psychology practice tests for subscribers. You can also access our Intro to Psychology CLEP Study Guide, which reviews concepts presented on the exam and tips for how to prepare for the exam.
  • The Introductory Psychology CLEP and all CLEP exams are administered online through the College Board. For step-by-step instructions on how to register for the Introductory Psychology CLEP exam online, visit the College Board website.
