CNA/HHA FAQs
- The CNA exam (Certified Nursing Assistant) and Home Health Aide exam (HHA) are both multiple-choice standardized tests required by all 50 states to certify and license students who have completed the necessary training as designated by their state.
- Those seeking to become a certified nursing assistant (like a nurse aide) or a home health aide must receive a passing score on the CNA or HHA exams. Nursing assistants provide varying levels of care and support to physically and/or mentally disabled individuals who are unable to care for themselves. Home health aides support patients by providing various in-home care, ranging from medical to personal.
- The CNA and HHA exams have similar topics related to patient care, ethics, legal issues, and roles and responsibilities. The CNA certification exam goes deeper and asks more technical questions. However, both exams focus on the same core topics:
- Activities of Daily Living
- Aging process
- Anatomy and Physiology
- Body Mechanics
- Client rights
- Communication
- Ethics and legal issues
- Infection control
- Medical terminology
- Mental health
- Nutrition
- Personal care
- Range of motion
- Safety
- Vital signs and testing
- Candidates must pass with a 70 or 80 (state-dependent) to pass the written portion of the CNA exam or HHA exam. In addition, they must score a 70 or 80 (again, check with your state) on the practical skills exam. They must also pass all critical skills components of the practical skills exam (such as hand washing, safety, and infection control), or they will automatically fail. If a candidate fails the practical skills exam, they will be provided with numerical codes that allow you to see where in the skillset they went wrong. For example, 3, 6, and 9 for hand washing. This would indicate errors in those steps for that skill.
- After passing their CNA or HHA exam, eligible candidates can work anywhere care skills are needed—nursing homes, elder care facilities, or private homes.
- According to the United States Bureau of Labor and Statistics, the CNA/HHA field is predicted to grow 8% between 2019 and 2029, which is faster than the national average.
- You can only retake the CNA exam three times in two years after completing your CNA classes and training program. After the third time, you must repeat the training program before you can test again.
- If you want to be a great CNA, beyond the knowledge you will display on your CNA exam, you should possess great observation skills, time management, and compassion. Many of your clients will be physically or emotionally compromised, or sometimes both. Respect and optimism will serve you well, also! Your clients will enjoy working with someone who believes they are important and capable.
