- The Principles of Supervision DSST exam measures your knowledge of the roles and responsibilities of the supervisor; planning, organization, and staffing; directing at the supervisory level; legal issues; stress management; union environments; and quality concerns. The exam content structure is divided into three primary domains:
- Roles and Responsibilities of Managers and Supervisors – 20%
- Management Functions – 50%
- Organizational Environment – 30%
- Specific content areas assessed by the Principles of Supervision DSST exam include:
- Management Functions—including planning, strategy, organizing, staffing, leadership styles, leadership approaches, motivation, directing at the supervisory level, and control
- Organizational Environment—concerning forces on an organization, organizational change, and workplace safety
- Roles and Responsibilities of Managers and Supervisors—managerial requirements, the evolution of management and supervision, managerial roles, and the three levels of management
- Legal issues
- Stress management
- Union environments
- Quality concerns
- The DSST Principles of Supervision test consists of 100 multiple-choice questions. Candidates should utilize tools to ensure that they are prepared to complete the test in two hours, which is the time limit for the test. It’s important to remember to pace yourself through the test. Some tests increase the complexity of questions as you move closer to the end of the section. That doesn’t mean later questions may be more difficult for you. You may know some topics better than others. If the test format allows, you’ll want to prioritize questions you know you can answer and save more challenging questions for later.
- The DSST Principles of Supervision test is scored using a criterion-referenced scoring method. Possible scores range from 200 to 500, with 400 being the minimum score to pass the exam. Most DSST test scores are calculated by the number of correct answers required to pass.
- There is no penalty for wrong answers on the Principles of Supervision DSST exam, and all correct answers are awarded the same points.
- More than 1,500 colleges and universities nationwide accept passing scores on the DSST exams in exchange for college credit. Speak to your school’s admissions counselor or other school representative for specific policies regarding credit awards. Here is a list of schools that accept DSST credits.
- The American Council on Education’s College Credit Recommendation Service (ACE CREDIT) has recommended that schools award 3 semester hours of credit for a passing score on the Principles of Supervision DSST exam. The Principles of Supervision DSST exam measures your knowledge of the supervisor’s roles and responsibilities, planning, organization, and staffing, directing at the supervisory level, legal issues, stress management, union environments, and quality concerns. The exam content structure is divided into three primary domains:
- Roles and Responsibilities of Managers and Supervisors – 20%
- Management Functions – 50%
- Organizational Environment – 30%
- Those familiar with management, staffing, planning, managing organizations, or the content featured on the DSST Principles of Supervision are encouraged to take the Principles of Supervision DSST exam. You don’t need to be a military service member to qualify for a DSST exam. Test takers include civilians, adult learners, college students, and military personnel.
- It’s certainly recommended. While the DSST aims to assess prior learning, reviewing study guides and sample questions ahead of time will give you the best chance of earning a passing score. Peterson’s recommends engaging in six weeks of our DSST Principles of Supervision test prep before test day.

From there, you can take three additional DSST Principles of Supervision practice exams to help solidify test concepts. Take these practice tests as many times as you’d like. Finally, take the post-test to assess your level of improvement since taking the diagnostic test. The results of the post-test will closely match your score on the actual DSST Principles of Supervision exam.
- The DSST consists of 38 tests in six subject categories: Physical Science, Technology, Humanities, Business, Math, and Social Science.
