Top GED FAQs

  • The GED—or General Educational Development Test—assesses an individual’s knowledge of high-school level concepts in four subject areas: reasoning through language arts, mathematical reasoning, science, and social studies. A GED credential is generally accepted by employers and colleges in lieu of a high school diploma.
  • The GED consists of 4 subject-based exams: mathematical reasoning, reasoning through language arts, science, and social studies. You are not required to take all 4 exams at once.  The mathematical reasoning section of the GED will test your knowledge on basic math, basic algebra, geometry, and graphs and functions. You will have 115 minutes to complete this exam of the GED. The reasoning through language arts determines your ability to read for meaning and identify and create arguments. It also assesses your grammar and language skills. You will have 150 minutes to complete a multiple choice section and 1 written essay. For the social studies section of the GED, you’ll be tested on the following topics: reading for meaning in social studies; analyzing historical events and arguments in social studies; and using numbers and graphs in social studies. You’ll have 70 minutes to complete. The science test of the GED will test your knowledge on the following topics: reading for meaning in science; designing and interpreting science experiments; and using numbers and graphs in science. You’ll have 90 minutes to complete this test.
  • On average, it takes approximately 2-3 months for most people to get a GED. The entire GED takes about 7 hours, not including breaks. You are not required to take all 4 tests at one time. Below is a breakdown of the time allotted for each subject exam: Social Studies: 70 minutes Science: 90 minutes Math: 115 minutes Reasoning Through Language Arts: 150 minutes If you do not pass a GED exam in three attempts, there will be a 60-day waiting period before you can take the exam again.
