- The main differences between EMTs and Paramedics are the length of training and education required and the level of care they can provide for their patients. Here is some additional information about the differences between both:
- EMTs will need to complete a 170-hour course, while Paramedics need to complete a 6-to 12-month program ranging from 1,200 to 1,800 hours.
- EMTs know how to safely transport patients from the emergency scene to the medical facility. They have the basic knowledge and skills to stabilize patients and perform necessary interventions with ambulance equipment. EMTs are trained to recognize and intervene in medical and trauma emergencies. This training encompasses airway management, scene assessment, and medical emergencies. Paramedic courses build on EMT training and teach skills such as administering medications, starting intravenous lines, providing advanced airway management, EKG Interpretation for patients, and learning to provide emergency care to patients with life-threatening medical or traumatic emergencies.
- Finally, EMTs are not required to have any previous medical experience before enrolling in an EMT course. Before retooling in a Paramedic course, you must be an EMT and possess 6+ months of work experience. Aspiring Paramedics may also be required to have completed some college-level anatomy and physiology classes.
