SHSAT FAQs
- The SHSAT test is a standardized exam available to New York City residents pursuing admission to NYC’s Specialized High Schools. Eight of the nine highly-selective public high schools have a separate admission process that is different from general high school admissions.
- Students seeking admission to a Specialized High School in New York City may take the SHSAT test if they are both:
- A NYC resident
- A current eighth-grade student or first-time ninth-grade student
- There are two sections of the SHSAT test:
- English Language Arts (ELA): 57 questions cover revising/editing (finding and correcting language errors and improving writing) and reading comprehension (6 reading passages to test your analytical and comprehension skills).
- Math: There are 57 questions featuring word problems covering basic arithmetic skills, fractions, statistics, decimals, and more.
- There are 114 questions on the SHSAT test (94 of which are scored). You have three hours to complete the SHSAT.
- The SHSAT test is offered in late October for 8th graders and mid-November for 9th graders.
- Students receive a raw score based on the number of correct answers. The raw score is converted to a “scaled score” for each section of the test and a “composite score” for the entire test. The highest composite score you can earn is 700. Eight of nine Specialized High Schools will use your SHSAT score as the only factor for admission.
- To register for the SHSAT test, you must contact your middle school guidance counselor and tell them that you plan to take the test, and they will issue you an admission ticket.
- Peterson’s SHSAT prep offers two full-length SHSAT practice tests to help you fully grasp concepts on the SHSAT test. You can also access our SHSAT study guide with tips for how to prepare for the SHSAT test.
- Peterson’s two full-length SHSAT practice tests are timed to simulate the actual SHSAT test. Taking practice tests helps ease anxiety and bridge the gaps in course content.
- SHSAT practice times will vary by student. Peterson’s recommends that those studying for the SHSAT test take advantage of our SHSAT practice tests and study guide. Spending 6 weeks preparing for the SHSAT test will help you feel more prepared on test day.
