  • The Texas Higher Education Assessment (THEA) exam assesses the English, Mathematics, and Writing skills of freshman-level students, evaluating the college readiness of Texas students for college-level coursework.
  • There are three sections of the THEA exam:
    1. Reading: You’ll be presented with seven reading passages and answer 40 multiple-choice questions. Skills required for this section include understanding the material’s main idea and supporting details, evaluating the meaning of words and phrases, utilizing critical reasoning skills to evaluate written material, and more.
    2. Writing: There are two subsections—a writing sample and 40 multiple-choice questions. Skills for the writing sample include a student’s ability to organize, express, and support opinions and ideas on various topics. Skills needed for the multiple-choice subsection include recognizing purpose and audience, unity, focus, and development, effective organization in writing, sentence structure, usage, and mechanics.
    Math: This section contains 50 multiple-choice questions covering four general areas: fundamental mathematics, algebra, geometry, and problem-solving. Skills for this section include solving word problems involving integers, fractions, decimals, units of measurement, data interpretation and analysis, algebra, geometry, and problem-solving.
  • The Texas Higher Education Assessment (THEA) will determine an incoming freshman’s readiness for colleges and universities within Texas. It is a useful way for admissions to determine if prospective students are cut out for their chosen undergraduate program.
