  • The Veterinary Technician National Examination (VTNE) evaluates a veterinary technician’s competency to practice animal care.
  • Those seeking to become a veterinary technician must take the VTNE exam. To become a veterinary technician, you must complete a program accredited by the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) that leads to an associate degree after two years. Most veterinary technicians work in private veterinary practices where the veterinarian specializes in treating small animals, such as cats, dogs, and birds. Veterinary technicians also work in veterinary practices that treat large animals, emergency animal hospitals, research facilities, and zoos.
  • The VTNE exam has 225 multiple-choice questions that assess your knowledge of animal care in the following subjects or domains:
    • Pharmacy and pharmacology (14%)
    • Surgical preparation and assisting (16%)
    • Dentistry (8%)
    • Laboratory procedures (15%)
    • Animal care and nursing (24%)
    • Diagnostic imaging (8%)
    • Anesthesia and analgesia (15%)
    Only 200 questions are scored, and there is no penalty for incorrect or unanswered questions; you will only be scored on what you got right. Pharmacy and Pharmacology: 28 questions are in this section. They will test your knowledge in preparing, administering, and/or dispensing pharmacological and biological agents to comply with veterinary prescriptions and educate the client regarding pharmacological and biological agents administered for safety. Surgical Preparation and Assisting: There are 32 questions in this section. This section will test you on preparing and maintaining the surgical environment, equipment, instruments, and supplies, preparing the patient for a procedure, functioning as a sterile surgical technician, and keeping everything safe during the surgery. Dentistry: There are only 16 questions about dentistry, and they will be based on the following: preparing and maintaining the environment, equipment, instruments, and supplies for dental procedures. performing or assisting with dental procedures, and educating the client regarding dental health, including prophylactic and post-treatment care. Laboratory Procedures: 30 questions are in this section of the test. Make sure to know about collecting, preparing, and maintaining specimens for laboratory evaluation. performing laboratory tests and procedures, and keeping laboratory equipment and related supplies safe. Animal Care and Nursing: The bulk of the test will be about animal care, with 48 questions. You’ll see questions on the following: performing and documenting initial and ongoing evaluations of animals, performing animal nursing and clinical diagnostic procedures, educating clients and the public about animal care, and providing a safe, sanitary, and comfortable environment. Diagnostic Imaging: You will see 16 questions in this section, and they will focus on: producing diagnostic images and maintaining imaging equipment and related materials to keep things safe. Anesthesia and Analgesia: There are 30 questions in this section on the following: assisting in the development of the anesthetic plan, implementing the anesthetic plan, preparing and maintaining anesthetic equipment, assessing the need for analgesia, and educating the client about analgesic administration and the side effects of anesthetics and analgesics.
  • According to the American Association of Veterinary State Boards, the VTNE pass rate is 70.31%. If you’re wondering how to pass the VTNE exam, here are some useful tips: review your notes from your veterinary technology program, become familiar with the content on the exam, take practice tests, and utilize flashcards that test your knowledge of medical terms.
  • The VTNE is scored on a scale, which means your score will not directly tell you how many questions you answered correctly. Your raw score (the number of questions you answered correctly) is converted into a scale of 200 to 800 or 0 to 100. The type of scale used to score your test depends on the requirements of the state or province board where your results will be sent. On the 200 to 800 scale, a score of 425 and higher is a score for passing the VTNE. On the 0 to 100 scale, a score of 70 or 75 and higher (depending on your state or province’s standards) is passing.
  • I passed my VTNE. Now what? After you pass, you will not get a license or certificate. You must contact the American Association of Veterinary State Boards (AAVSB) in the state you plan to work in to determine their licensing, registration, or certificate requirements.
  • You do not want to rush studying and preparing for your veterinary technician exam. You will need ample time to study, or you might get stressed. It is recommended to study at least 8 weeks before your test, but 3 months will ensure that you have enough time. Try to study daily to remember and memorize what you are studying.
